But in Buddha's time Savat Kandy had a different method. At that time, people also gave memorial gifts to Brahmins for the dead. Many goats died for that charity. Those animals were killed and the meat was cooked and given as alms.
The monks got to see how these people killed animals and prepared for the charity donation. Those monks visited the Blessed One in the evening and worshiped and inquired about the matter.
“Lord, blessed ones, these people have lost the lives of many beings and call the Brahmins and offer a memorial for the dead. Is there any improvement in this system with memory?"
"Mr., there is no improvement. It will be an improvement if people gather from Pranagata to give a reminder. In the past, sages sitting in the sky gave sermons and pointed out the evil consequences of that kind of memory. That's when at that time people in Dambadi gave up the charity of the people who killed animals.
Then those monks appealed to the Blessed One to tell the story of the past.
"Monks, once upon a time there lived a king named Brahmadatta in Varanasi. At that time, a certain Brahmin, Dr. Disapamok, who had passed away in the Three Vedas, wanted to give a memory. He brought a goat for it. He spoke to one of his students and said:
“Child…. Throw this goat into the river and take a good bath... After that put a garland of flowers on the neck, draw lines on all five fingers with holy ashes and draw them here.
Then that student took that goat to the river and bathed it . A flower garland was thrown. All five fingers were lined with holy ash. There was a goat in the river bank.
The goat knows that he is going to be killed now . This is a karma done by the previous soul. I also saw that karma ends with this soul. He laughed out loud when he saw it. After that, he saw what was happening to the Brahmin who killed himself. He felt great sadness that this Bamuna would also suffer the same fate as he had so far. Then the goat cried with a great distressing voice.
Then Bamuna's students surrounded the goat and questioned it. "Friendly goat... why did you laugh at the loud noise and then start crying after a while?"
“ Oh…. This is not the place to ask me about that. Take me to your Dr. Brahmin. That's where I said. "
Then they took the goat and went to Dr. Brahmin. All these details were told. The Brahmin spoke to the goat.
“ Okay…. Goats…. Now tell me... Why did you laugh out loud? Why did you cry after that? "
“The Brahmin…. I remembered my former self. Like you in my previous life, I was a Brahmin who studied the Vedas well. I also killed a goat because I wanted to give a souvenir. Donated. After killing that one goat, four hundred and ninety souls were beheaded. This is the five hundredth soul. My sins are over with this soul. When I thought that I would be freed from that sadness, I smiled happily.
This is what made me cry next. 'Now this Brahmin has killed me and I am suffering and I have to eat five hundred blows on my head! It's going to be very sad, isn't it!' I thought. Come on, that's why I cried!”
"Dear goat... you are not afraid. I will not kill you."
“Brahmin, what are you talking about? Whether you kill me or not, there is no one who can save me from my death today."
" not…. Goat... don't be afraid. I will protect you. Behaves with you "
“ No brahmin, I get some protection from you. But the sin I committed that day is very serious."
Then the Brahmin allowed the goat to be free. He said that he will not allow anyone to kill this goat and took the goat with him and left with the student s. Then the goat ran onto a rock. He climbed a bush and raised his neck and started eating the leaves of those plants. Immediately the sky roared and a hail fell on that rock. A stone was thrown from the place where it hit. Go straight and hit the goat's neck and the head was separated from the trunk! People gathered to see this event.
A tree god was watching this event. That tree god is none other than Bodhisattvas. So that god made himself visible to the masses by his divine inspiration. He sat in the sky with a louse tied. Sweetly said this stanza.
"Idin Danit Nam Lovasso
This place of birth and death is born
No animal is ever killed
"He who kills animals will be punished."
So that god told the masses about the sufferings of the four hells. He told about the animals who fell into the terrible hell and suffered endlessly. People who heard that sermon gave up killing animals to remember. Danadi started doing charity. I was the tree god at that time.
