17. Malutha Jathakaya

In those days, the Blessed One was staying at Jetavanya in Sawat. At that time, two monks who had become old and ordained lived in a certain forest in the country of Kosol. One thera name was known as 'Kalu'. The name of the other world was known as 'Aloka'. One day an old monk named Aloka asked another old monk a question.

"Lord, when will it be black and cold?"

He replied, "Not when the moon is turning black, but it is cold." Then that monk did not agree to it and remained silent.

Another day, the monk named Kalu asked the other monk a question.

"Lord, Aloka, when will it be cold?"

He replied, "It's not cold when the moon is shining." Then that monk did not agree to it. No one could choose who said the right thing between the two. Both the monks found the answer to the question and went to the Blessed One. He went and worshiped the Blessed One and told his question.

"Lord, blessed ones, when will it be cold?"

"Brother, I have answered the same question of yours before."

Then those two bhikkhus appealed to the Blessed One to tell him the details of the soul.

“Sir, it happened like this. A long time ago, a lion and a tiger lived at the foot of a certain rock. The two are good friends. Lived in the same rock. At that time, Bodhisattvas were also ordained as sages and lived at the foot of that rock. One day there was an argument between that lion and the tiger. The tiger said that the moon gets cold when it gets dark. The lion said that the moon's light gets colder when it grows.

Those two could not solve the problem. The Bodhisattvas approached and asked the question. Then the Bodhisattva recited this stanza.

"When the moon goes dark

By the time the moon comes

At some point if the wind blows

Then the cold comes

So here you two are

"There was no defeat," he explained.

So monks, didn't I answer that question at the same time" Chaturarya Satyam preached. At the end of that sermon, both the old monks became sovan.

"Monks, at that time the tiger was this black monk. The lion was a monk named Aloka. "I was the ascetic who solved the problem," he said.
